Safe zone

Also called: Safe area, Title safe

Definition

A safe zone is the area of a video frame where text and key visuals won’t be hidden by the player’s interface, such as buttons, captions, usernames or navigation bars, or cut off by cropping.

What “safe zone” means

The concept comes from television, where “title safe” and “action safe” margins protected text from being cut off by old screens that cropped the picture. On short-form apps, the problem is different: the video is overlaid by interface elements. The right edge holds like, comment and share buttons; the bottom holds the account name, the post caption, the sound and the app’s navigation; the top can hold tabs or a search bar.

Each platform covers slightly different areas and redesigns its interface from time to time, so safe zones are approximate. A common approach is to design for the intersection: keep important content in the central area that none of the major apps cover.

Why it matters for short explainer videos

An explainer depends on its text: titles, numbers, labels, captions. If the key number sits behind the like button or the punchline sits under the username, the video fails even if it’s beautifully animated. Designing to the safe zone is one of the simplest ways to make one video work on TikTok, Reels and Shorts at once.

It also matters for captions. Burned-in captions placed too low collide with the post caption overlay; placed too high, they cover the visuals.

Example

A creator puts the main title at the very top of a 1080×1920 frame and a logo in the bottom-right corner. On TikTok, the logo disappears under the share button and the title sits near the top tabs. Moving the title just below the top band and the logo to the upper left, inside the central area, fixes both without changing the design.

How Motiongist handles it

Motiongist lays out every element of its vertical videos inside the safe zones of TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts: titles, diagrams, captions and branding. You don’t have to adjust anything, and you can’t move elements freely either, since there is no manual layout editor.

The safe zones guide explains the zones in detail if you edit or add overlays in another app afterward.
