Most how-to videos are screen recordings: someone clicks through an interface while talking. They work, but they go stale with every redesign, they are hard to follow on a phone, and they rarely explain why each step matters.
Motiongist makes a different kind of tutorial. It does not record your screen. It draws the flow: numbered steps, simplified mock-ups of the panels involved, arrows and highlights that appear as the narration reaches them. It is the overview people need before they start clicking, or the explanation of a process that spans several tools.
How it works
From written steps to a narrated tutorial
- Step 1
Give it the steps
Paste your instructions as a script, link to the help article, or upload the document. Pick the beginner audience for customers, developers for technical setups.
- Step 2
Describe the screens that matter
Use must-show notes like “the Settings > Domains panel” or “the green Save button”. The mock-ups are drawn from those descriptions.
- Step 3
Check the order in the storyboard
The free storyboard lists every step and what appears on screen. Fix a button name or swap two steps before rendering.
- Step 4
Put it where people get stuck
Embed the player in your help center, add the share link to a support macro, or post it to your channels.
Example
Connect a custom domain to your website in four steps
What you give: “How to connect a custom domain to a hosted website. For non-technical small business owners. Must show: the DNS record moving from host to registrar.”
What the video shows, scene by scene
- 0–6 s
Hook. A long default web address shrinks into a short custom domain. Title: “Your own domain in four steps.”
- 6–25 s
Step 1, buy the domain. A simplified registrar search box, a name typed in, a green “available” tick.
- 25–50 s
Step 2, tell your host. A mock settings panel slides in and an “Add domain” field is highlighted.
- 50–78 s
Step 3, copy the DNS records. Host and registrar panels sit side by side; an arrow carries a record across. A signpost analogy explains what a DNS record does.
- 78–98 s
Step 4, wait and check. A clock spins while the change spreads, then the domain status turns green and a padlock appears.
- 98–110 s
Recap. The four numbered steps stack up as a checklist.

Why Motiongist
Why draw a tutorial instead of recording it
Clean mock-ups, not cluttered screens
Each panel is simplified to the element that matters, so viewers see where to look instead of hunting through a full interface.
Numbered, ordered, checked
Steps are numbered on screen and listed in the storyboard, where you fix the order and the wording for free before rendering.
Cheap to update
When the process changes, edit the script and run a revision: it costs 50% of the base price because only changed scenes are rebuilt.
Embeddable in your help center
An unlisted share page with an embeddable player, an optional download, and an optional button to the next step.
Localized help, same visuals
Narrate the same tutorial in any of 10 languages, with captions and on-screen text that follow.
Your product’s colors
Use your brand look from the Solo plan so the mock-ups feel like your product, not a generic app.
Tutorial video or screen recording: which one?
Use Motiongist when the goal is understanding: what the steps are, why they come in that order, and what happens behind the scenes. Use a screen recording when someone needs to follow every click in the real interface.
Many teams use both: a short motion-design overview at the top of a help article, then a recording or screenshots further down for the detail.
Limits to know
- Mock-ups are simplified illustrations, not pixel-perfect copies of your interface.
- You can’t upload screenshots or clips; the only image upload is your logo.
- Videos run 45 to 180 seconds, so split long procedures into several tutorials.

FAQ
Questions, answered
Does Motiongist record my screen?
No. It draws simplified mock-ups of the screens you describe, with numbered steps and highlights timed to the narration. For a click-by-click recording, use a screen recorder alongside it.
Can the video show my actual interface?
Not as screenshots: uploads are limited to your logo. Describe the key panels and buttons in the must-show notes, and use your brand colors so the mock-ups feel familiar.
What happens when our UI changes?
Edit the steps and run a revision. It costs 50% of the base price, because only the scenes that changed are rebuilt.
Can I embed tutorials in our help center?
Yes. Each video can have an unlisted share page with an embeddable player. You can also download the MP4 and SRT and host them yourself.
How long can a tutorial be?
Up to 180 seconds (150–180 s for the long format). Check how long your written steps take to narrate with Words to minutes.
